STUNNING SLOVENIA

STUNNING SLOVENIA

EAN DECKER, TRIPTIME INSURANCE

I first learned about Slovenia several years ago after signing up for a travel & tourism class in college and was amazed at its vast landscape.  The coastal city of Portoroz is actually a sister city to Indianapolis, Indiana (where Triptime is located).  The University of Portoroz partnered up with IUPUI to offer a course of visual learning and experience using a Skype session so both locations could see students in the classroom and have live discussions about the differences/similarities between the U.S. and Slovenia, along with our cultures and many other related topics.  The main topic was to understand the linkage between Indianapolis and Slovenia while learning historical context on the capital city of Ljubjana.

Native Slovenians played a crucial role in the development of a well known neighborhood close to downtown Indianapolis during the early 1900’s.  This neighborhood is now known as “Haughville.”  Haughville doesn’t bring a smile to many local residents faces these days due to it’s history of crime and poverty but at one time it was a pretty decent place to live, and largely inhabited by Slovenian families intent on starting a new life in America.  Slovenians were known as skilled metal workers and would often leave Slovenia for America, where metal work was needed to begin working in a metal factory and establish themselves.  Indianapolis offered that for a number of Slovenian immigrants and once established, the idea was to bring any other family they had to America to complete the relocation.  Now, Americans are learning about Slovenia and all of the natural wonders this tiny country possesses along with the extraordinary location of the country in Europe.

Slovenia:  One of the hidden gems of Europe… is situated between popular tourist landing spots of Italy and Croatia.  The prime location of this country would be a fantastic centralized home base for those traveling to Europe and eager to explore the Mediterranean region along with parts of Bavaria and even Turkey.  Ask your friends if they’ve ever heard of the coastal town of Portoroz, or the capital city Ljubljana?  How does one pronounce Ljubljana?  Could you point it out on a map, even after I’ve told you where it is located?  Don’t feel bad if you can’t answer any of these questions with a resounding YES.  The truth is that many people know little about this place.

See the pictures below to see the central location between the Mediterranean and Europe which bodes just as well for ocean and boating lovers as it does for nature and outdoor types.   Located along the Adriatic Sea with beautiful beaches and coastline, Slovenia also has a dramatic mountain scape of the Julian Alps, which happens to be a prime ski location.  Caving, Rafting, boating, hiking and biking are also some of the other activities usually enjoyed while visiting Slovenia.

Landmark to visit:  Ljublijana Castle is quite a historical site to be experience. Make Ljubljana a city to add to your bucket list if you plan on visiting Europe.  I’d encourage travelers of all ages and interests to visit Slovenia.
