TRAVEL WITH PURPOSE

Coming back by giving back

By Jason Jourdan

The travel industry is continuing its recovery by focusing on Travel with Purpose. Organizations in various destinations are offering travel packages designed for conscientious travelers who want to give back. Tourists and business professionals alike can support companies dedicated to causes improving the lives of individuals and communities. It’s time to pack for impact! From hotels and resorts to airlines and travel agencies, international tourism companies are making a comeback by making a difference.

Lifestyle marketing agency, Vanilla Luxury, published an article detailing seven international hotels that provide sustainable relief to surrounding areas and institutions. Some of these destinations include:

–    InterContinental, Hong Kong

–    Banyan Tree, Maldives

–    New World, Saigon

–    Angkor Pearl, Khmer

–    U Chiang Mai, Chiang Mai

–    Sukau Rainforest Lodge, Borneo

The final destination on the list, Mövenpick Hotel Beirut in Lebanon, is known for the innovative ways it optimizes resources and reduces waste. They are Green Globe certified, meaning the Mövenpick business meets sustainable tourism practices and partners’ criteria. In addition to its 5-star resort experience, Mövenpick partners with Right4Children, a Nepal-based non-profit assisting underprivileged youth.

Netflix recently released a second season to The Most Amazing Vacation Rentals. In one episode, the three hosts dive into some of the luxurious international locations with charitable intentions. The àni Dominican Republic, a private 21,000 square foot resort, targets families, large groups, and corporate gatherings with extravagant amenities:

–    Private spa

–    Tennis court

–    Waterslides

–    Entertainment pavilions

The rental fees fund a local Art Academy encouraging students of the Dominican Republic, Sri Lanka, and Thailand to continue their creative drive. The children’s art pieces are on display around the resort for guests to enjoy and purchase.

The show also highlighted The Cedar House in Yoshino, Japan. The popular rental began as a collaboration between Airbnb founder Joe Gebbia and Japanese architect, Go Hasegawa. The partners sought to develop a destination built around the mantra of “community as your host.” Cedar House provides a showcase for local talent and is a job creation engine for its Japanese neighbors. All proceeds from the rental return to the community, with 40% supporting neighborhood projects.
