A CASE OF YOLO-ISM

Travel is the Cure for Millennials

By Jason Jourdan

A new malady is spreading across the globe; doctors are referring to it as YOLO-ism. Research shows Millennials are at the highest risk, with its most telling symptoms including a “You Only Live Once” mentality and an intense desire to travel!

According to Condor Ferries, infected with a yearning for once-in-a-lifetime itineraries and destinations dripping in local culture, 86% of Millennials choose travel-related cultural experiences over partying and shopping. The data shows afflicted individuals between the ages of 25 and 40 would rather stay amongst the locals than pay for a luxury hotel.

When it comes to traveling, this generation may display other characteristics and preferences differentiating them from their predecessors. The folks at G Adventures have been among the first to respond to this epidemic by curating a selection of “YOLO Tours” targeting seekers of adventure, perfect Instagram moments, and international socialization. Speaking to Travel Pulse, the owner and founder of G Adventures, Bruce Poon Tip, described how Millennials search for real-world social experiences outside their online profiles while still sharing content with friends and family. It appears impossible for the online generation to log off completely, so G Adventures has built-in digital connectivity in each of their travel packages.

G Adventures is one of many travel companies offering culturally immersive experiences. Featuring 185 YOLO tours with unique travel opportunities and timeframes friendly to the Millennial wallets, most trips are less than a week and cost under $2,000. YOLO-stricken adventurists shout with joy when handed itineraries for destinations all over the world like:

  • Japan
  • Indonesia
  • South America
  • Africa
  • American West

Modern consumerism has proven detrimental to many of the world’s greatest tourism sites and cities. According to eco-friendly advisor Sustainable Travel International, transportation contributes 49% of all global carbon emissions. Travelers can safely seek treatment for their ailments while helping Mother Nature heal with the help of sustainable travel companies and resources for carbon prevention. Sustainable Travel International recommends the following:

  • Fly Economy
  • Pack light
  • Choose efficient transportation to explore the destination
  • Power down electronics and log off for a while
  • Eat local cuisine and reduce food waste
  • Purchase meaningful souvenirs with a functional purpose
  • Stay at eco-friendly hotels

The prognosis is a positive one. Millennials manage their conditions by discovering new ways to travel that benefit both the land and its people. Advanced therapies include feasting on local cuisine, utilizing public transportation, and investing in the cultural values and attitudes of the region. Ultimately, the most effective treatment is to YOLO it!
